FAQ
What is coaching?
Coaching is a professional alliance that helps you achieve extraordinary results in your life, business, career or organisation. It helps you create a vision of where you want to be – and then supports, encourages and motivates you to get there.
Coaching is about planning and action, feedback and reflection. It's goal-orientated and results-focused.
Coaching works because you're accountable to someone who is your greatest supporter – your coach. You're asked to do more than you would have on your own. And you're given the structure to accomplish more.
How is therapy different from coaching?
Psychotherapy and counselling usually deal with emotional and behavioural dysfunction, healing pain and inner conflict. Therapy explores the past to understand current problems.
Coaching assumes that people are healthy, motivated and have many strengths and resources. It's forward-moving and future-focused.
How is coaching different from training?
Training follows a set curriculum with pre-defined outcomes. Coaching doesn't have a set curriculum, and the objectives are determined by the client with their coach's guidance.
Can I use coaching just for a short-term project?
Yes. Coaching works very well when you have a clearly defined goal to achieve. Coaching can achieve results in a short time as well as support you over the long-haul.
Who hires a coach?
Anyone who wants to achieve more, who is committed to success and who believes more is possible in their life.
Do I have to choose between life coaching or business coaching?
You'll probably want to start by focusing on one or the other. But the boundaries between our personal and business lives are becoming blurred, and you'll find that coaching can move effortlessly from one area to another.
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is natural, deep state of relaxation and concentration that lets your mind concentrate on positive suggestions. When you're in a hypnotic trance you're neither asleep nor unconscious – you're still in control of yourself, but deeply focused on your internal experience and the voice of the hypnotherapist.
We go into trance states naturally, too. Whenever you're absorbed in a book or the television, or driving on 'auto pilot' you're in the same altered state as hypnosis.
What does it feel like?
Hypnosis is different for different people, but actually feels very normal and pleasant. Some people don't believe they've been hypnotised because they expect to feel odd and strange. Forget the zombie image from the cinema – that's just dramatic effect!
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Some of us find it easier to go into hypnosis more quickly and more deeply than others. But most people can at least be hypnotised into a light trance. Co-operate with your hypnotherapist and follow their instructions, and you'll find it easier and easier at every session.
What is Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)?
NLP is a form of coaching used to enhance people's skills. It covers topics such as modelling excellence in others; studying and modifying language patterns, behaviours, body postures and gestures; various goal setting and change strategies. It also focuses on phobia cures, using anchors to change states (feelings) at will and reframing belief systems.
NLP is a speedy, short-term coaching model used to change, challenge or improve people's 'maps of the world' – that is, how they create their own reality. It is a very practical way of making changes to our lives, and for improving our performance.
