Goal Setting and Making Plans
So, you’ve decided it’s time to make a change, to take charge of your life and be in control!
All you need now is a way to put intentions into action. And here’s an excellent way to do it: our Step-by-Step Guide to Positive Control.
Step 1
Start by pinpointing what it is you want to change: download the Life Areas Assessment sheet and rate how happy you are with different areas of your life.
Step 2
When you’ve decided which area you want to work on, decide what it is about that area that concerns you the most.
For example, if you’re most unhappy about Finances, do you need to earn more money? Decrease your debt? Be more careful and keep track of your spending?
Step 3
Make a list of the things you want to work on. Don’t over-stress yourself: remember, it’s better to do one thing well than ten things half-heartedly.
Step 4
Look at your list and make sure they’re all stated as Specific Positive Goals. For example, don’t say ‘I want more holidays’; say ‘I‘m going to take two weeks off every quarter and six long-weekends a year’ – and state exactly when these will be!
Step 5
Now, make sure you’ve made choices and goals that are right for you: download the Well-Formed Outcome sheet and the EXAMPLE Well-Formed Outcome sheet.
Step 6
If everything’s OK, you can decide exactly what you’re going to do and when you’re going to do it. And you can keep track of your progress (very important!).

Step 7
Achieve your goals and enjoy your success!!
Remember:
• Write your goals down
• Start by setting large goals – then chunk into smaller
goals if necessary
• Make sure they’re clearly defined
• Have target dates by which you will achieve them
• Choose a reward for when you reach your goals
• Review your goals daily (and remind yourself of that reward!)
• Monitor your progress
• Measure how you’re progressing towards achieving your
goal
• Change your goals if necessary – they’re not set
in stone!
• Have a defined support infrastructure – you don’t
have to do it all on your own
